What is a Skoolie?

Updated: Dec 14, 2021

A common question that we often get when talking about our project is ‘what is a Skoolie?’ A Skoolie is a school bus that has been converted into a small home. While the definition of Skoolie is specific to school buses, the term is generally applied to the conversion of any bus type.

Resembling RVs with their kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms, used buses are transformed into tiny houses on wheels. With the seats removed, and interior refinished with utilities, most buses offer anywhere between 160 and 300 square feet of comfortable living space, size that is minimalistic and affordable.

A nomad lifestyle is what you can expect. Like camper vans utilizing off-grid solutions, Skoolies are often designed and equipped to offer luxury sustainable living with travel freedom. Commonly added features include heat, electricity, water and sewage for full-time living.

Both the bus- and van-life communities were already growing quickly. Yet the movements have garnered increased interest thanks to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and their subsequent lockdowns. Trapped at home, bored and in desperate need of vacations, it is no wonder why so many people are using the extra time to prepare for their escape to adventure and finding different ways to achieve it.
